the shirt—whether it has sleeves or not, (1) whether he puts (2) his arms (3) inside it or leaves them outside (4), and whether the garment is sound or torn (5). In the same manner he may not wear the jubba or the qabāʾ into which one places his arms (6), nor the coat of mail known as “ʿarq jīn” (7) and anything similar to it (8), by unanimous agreement of the imams. If, however, he merely throws the qabāʾ (9) over his shoulders without inserting his arms, the ruling is disputed. This is what the jurists mean when they say, “He must not wear the makhīt.” The makhīt is (10) any item of clothing tailored to the exact shape of a limb. Likewise, he is not allowed to wear anything that serves the same purpose as leather socks, such as the mūq (11), stockings, and the like.
