Manāsik al-ḤajjIbn Taimiya

And whoever reaches the miqāt during the Hajj months is free to choose one of three modes—namely: tamattuʿ, ifrād, and qirān.

– If he so wishes, he may enter iḥrām (1) for ʿumrah; once he has completed (2) it, he pronounces the talbiyah for Hajj. This form is the one that is exclusively (3) called tamattuʿ.

– If he prefers, he may enter iḥrām for both rites together, or begin with iḥrām for ʿumrah and then incorporate Hajj into it before performing ṭawāf; this is qirān, and it falls under the broader designation (4) of tamattuʿ in the Quran, the Sunnah, and the statements of the Companions—may Allah be pleased with them.

– Or, if he wishes, he may enter iḥrām solely for Hajj; this is ifrād.

The Maliki and Hanbali jurists exempt three situations from the obligation of entering the state of ihram: (1) when one enters Makka for lawful combat, (2) when driven by fear, or (3) when a frequently recurring need requires it. The Shafi‘i school, one narration from Ahmad, and the opinion preferred by Ibn al-Qayyim hold that ihram is not obligatory in these cases. See: Majmaʽ al-Anhur 1:266; Mawahib al-Jalil 3:43; al-Majmuʽ 7:10; al-Insaf 3:427; Zad al-Maʽad 3:337. (1) In C and D the verb reads: “ahalla.” (2) In A and B it reads: “ahala.” (3) The phrase “wa-hadha alladhi yakhtassu” appears in B, C, and D as “wa-huwa yakhussu.” (4) In B the wording is “bi-ism.”
