al-Juhfah, there is a difference of opinion on the issue. (1)
As for the other three miqats (2): the distance between each of them and Mecca is roughly (3) two (4) stages.
No one is allowed to pass the miqat when intending Hajj or ʿumrah unless he has already entered the state of ihram (5).
Should a person head for Mecca for trade or merely for a visit (6), it is recommended that he enter ihram, though whether this is strictly obligatory is itself a matter of dispute (7).
(1) The Hanbalis and Shafi‘is maintain that such pilgrims must assume ihram (the state of sacral consecration) at Dhu al-Hulayfa. The Hanafis and Malikis—an opinion also preferred by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya—permit them to pass Dhu al-Hulayfa and enter ihram at al-Juhfa instead. Ibn Taymiyya states in al-Ikhtiyarat (p. 174): “Their miqat is al-Juhfa, like the people of Egypt and Syria. If they travel through Madina, they may delay ihram until al-Juhfa; they are not obliged to assume it at Dhu al-Hulayfa. This is likewise the view of Abu Hanifa and Malik.” See: Bada‘i al-Sana‘i 2:164; Mawahib al-Jalil 3:53; al-Majmu‘ 7:206; al-Insaf 3:425.
(2) That is, Qarn al-Manazil, Yalamlam, and Dhat Irq.
(3) The word “nahw” (approximately) is absent from MS B.
(4) The preposition “min” (from) occurs only in MS A.
(5) MSS A and B read: “bi-l-ihram” (with ihram).
(6) MS B reads: “ziyara” (visit).
(7) The Hanafis, Malikis, and Hanbalis hold that entering ihram is obligatory.
