—that is, auspicious fortune, wealth, and sovereignty—for none of these will save him from You save faith and God-consciousness.
As for trust (tawakkul), it is due to Allah alone, and hopeful longing is directed to Him (1) alone, as the Exalted has said:
“And they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us,’ ”
and He did not say,
“and His Messenger.”
They also said,
“Indeed, to Allah we turn in longing” ⦗at-Tawbah: 59⦘,
and did not say here,
“and His Messenger,” as He, Most High, said concerning giving (2). Rather, this is akin to His statement:
“So when you have finished, then strive (7), and to your Lord turn with longing.” ⦗ash-Sharḥ: 7–8⦘
He, Most High, also said:
“Those to whom people said, ‘Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them,’ but it only increased them in faith, and they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Trustee.’ ” ⦗Āl ʿImrān: 173⦘
Al-Bukhārī (3) records from Ibn ʿAbbās that he said:
“ ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Trustee’—Abraham uttered it when he was cast into the fire, and Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—uttered it when the people said to him, ‘Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them,’ which only increased them in faith, and they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Trustee.’ ”
The Exalted has also said:
“O Prophet, Allah is sufficient for you and for the believers who follow you.” ⦗al-Anfāl: 64⦘—that is, Allah alone is sufficient for you and for the believers who follow you.
