and Dhāt ʿIrq (1),
When the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—fixed the miqāts he said, “They are for their own people (2) and for anyone who passes through them, though not of their people, who intends Hajj or ʿUmrah (3)(4). Whoever lives inside them should assume iḥrām from his own home; even the people of Mecca enter iḥrām from Mecca itself.” (5)
As for Dhū’l-Ḥulayfah: it is the farthest of the miqāts. The distance between it and Mecca is ten (6) stages (7)—more or less, depending on the route, for several roads lead from it to Mecca. It is also called Wādī al-ʿAqīq (8), and its mosque is known as Masjid al-Shajarah.
= The Tihama road in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; the southern side of the Tihama plain lies about 120 km from Mecca.
(1) Tawdiḥ al-Ahkam 4/47 states: “It is also called al-Dirayba—d with fatḥa, r with kasra, then a silent y—the singular of adribah; these are small hills situated about 100 km east of Mecca, now abandoned because no road reaches them.”
(2) In copy B: “for them.”
(3) In copies C and D: “for whoever.”
(4) In copies C and D: “and the ʿumra.”
(5) Reported by al-Bukhari, no. 1526, and Muslim, no. 1181, from the hadith of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both.
(6) In copies A and B: “ten.”
(7) marahil (stages) is the plural of marḥala, the distance a traveler covers in roughly one day or the span between two stops; one marḥala equals about 38.4 km. See: Lisan al-Arab 11/280; al-Dalail wa-l-Isharat, commentary on Akhsar al-Mukhtasarat, 2/39.
(8) In copy B: “and it is called.”
