The very first (1) thing a person intending Hajj or ʿUmrah (2) must do when he wishes to enter upon either of them is [to assume ihram for that purpose; before doing so he remains merely someone planning Hajj or ʿUmrah and has not yet begun either one] (3). His situation is like that of someone setting out for the Friday congregational prayer: he earns the reward for the walk, yet he does not actually enter the prayer until he consecrates himself with the opening takbir. Accordingly, when he reaches (4) the miqat he is required to assume ihram.

The miqats are five (5): Dhu al-Hulayfah (6),

(1) From this point manuscript (B) begins. (2) In manuscripts (C) and (D) the phrase “and the minor pilgrimage (umrah)” is added. (3) The text enclosed in brackets is missing from manuscript (A). (4) The word “ila” (to) is omitted in manuscript (D). (5) Shaykh al-Islam said in Sharh al-Umdah 5/178: “These five mawāqit are explicitly established by the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—according to the majority of our scholars, and this is also the stated position of Abu Abd Allah. Abul-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzi and others of our school hold that Dhat Irq was designated only by the personal reasoning (ijtihad) of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, after which consensus formed upon it. … The first view is the correct one, because of the sound, reliable, elevated reports we have mentioned; their multiplicity and their appearance with both connected and disconnected chains from various routes oblige us to act upon them.” (6) Al-Mutaliʿ, p. 200: “Dhu al-Hulayfa—damma on the ḥ and fatha on the l—is a well-known locale situated six miles from Madinah, some say seven, as reported by Qadi Iyad and others.” Taysir al-ʿAllam 1/359: “It is now called Abar Ali, and the surrounding built-up area has almost …”
