Manāsik al-ḤajjIbn Taimiya

Then he departs (1) from Mina. If he spends the night at al-Muḥaṣṣab—also called al-Abṭaḥ, the stretch between the two mountains and the cemetery—and only thereafter sets off (2), that is commendable; for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, spent the night there and then departed (3). He did not remain in Mecca after coming forth (4) from Mina; rather, he bade farewell (5) to the House and proclaimed (6), “Let no one depart until his final act has been at the House” (7) (8).

Accordingly, the pilgrim must not leave until he has bid farewell to the House, performing the Farewell Circumambulation, so that his last act is at the House (9). Whoever stays on in Mecca incurs no such farewell (10).

(1) MS A reads: “nafar”; MS C: “idha nafar al-nas” (when the people depart); MS D: “idha nafar” (when he departs). (2) MS B reads: “yanfir” (he departs). (3) On the authority of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Prophet prayed Dhuhr and Asr, then Maghrib and Isha, slept briefly at al-Muhassab, then mounted and went to the House and circumambulated it.” Reported by al-Bukhari, 1764. (4) In MSS A and B the word appears as “sadrahu” (his departure). (5) MS A reads: “wadaʿ” (farewell); MS B: “wadaʿ” (variant spelling). (6) MS B adds: “fa-qala” (and he said). (7) The phrase “bi-l-bayt” (around the House) is omitted in MS B. (8) Reported by al-Bukhari, 1755, and Muslim, 1327, from the narration of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them). (9) The clause “hatta yakuna akhiru ʿahdihi bi-l-bayt” (so that his last act is at the House) is absent from MS B. (10) MS B reads: “lahu” (for him).
