performed tamattuʿ with the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—did not go (1) between Safa and Marwa more than once (2), and that was before the standing at ʿArafah (3). Therefore, if the mutamattiʿ contents himself with that first saʿy, it is sufficient for him, just as it suffices the qarin and the mufrid (4).
ʿAbdullāh ibn Ahmad ibn Ḥanbal likewise said: I (5) asked my father, “How many times should the mutamattiʿ go between Safa and Marwa?” He replied, “If he performs two circuits—meaning one around the House and one between (6) Safa and Marwa—then that is better; but if he makes only one circuit, there is no harm (7), though two circuits are more pleasing to me.” (8)
(1) The wording “they did not circumambulate” appears in MSS A and B as “they circumambulate.”
(2) The phrase “except once” is absent from MSS A and B.
(3) This refers to Muslim, hadith 1213, narrated by Jabir: “We set out with the Messenger of Allah, pronouncing the talbiyah for hajj, accompanied by women and children. When we reached Makka we performed tawaf of the House and saʿy between Safa and Marwa. The Prophet said: ‘Whoever has no sacrificial animal with him should exit the state of ihram.’ We asked, ‘All restrictions?’ He replied, ‘All of them.’ So we went to our wives, wore our clothes, and applied perfume. On the Day of Tarwiyah we re-entered ihram for hajj, and the first tawaf between Safa and Marwa sufficed us.”
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya comments in Sharh al-ʿUmda, 5/278: “This text proves that the mutamattiʿ performs only one saʿy between Safa and Marwa, just like the qarin and the mufrid.”
(4) The order “the qarin and the mufrid” appears in MSS C and D as “the mufrid and the qarin.”
(5) MSS C and D read: “it was said.”
(6) MS B adds: “what is between.”
(7) MSS B and D read: “so indeed.”
