And it is recommended that each pebble be a little larger than a chickpea (1) yet smaller than a hazelnut (2).
If he breaks a larger stone into pieces (3), that is permissible (4); however, collecting pebbles is better than chiselling them off (5) the mountain.

— It is recommended to pick the pebbles on one’s way to Mina or at Muzdalifah; it is disliked to take them from inside Mina, from rubbish heaps, or from the Sanctuary of the Kaʿba; and it is permissible to collect them from any other place. See Sharh al-Muntaha 1/583; Kashshaf al-Qinaʿ 2/498. (1) Al-Misbah al-Munir, 1/150: himmis (chick-pea) – the initial h is read with a kasra and the mim is doubled; Basran grammarians also keep the kasra, whereas Kufans pronounce the h with a fatha. (2) bunduq (hazelnut): both the ba and the dal take a damma. The word is a Persian loan, not native Arabic. See Al-Mutaliʿ, p. 163. (3) MSS A and B read: “kasr” (breaking). (4) According to the school position it is disliked to crush them; see Sharh al-Muntaha 1/583; Kashshaf al-Qinaʿ 2/498. (5) MS B reads: “taksir” (crushing). (6) MS C reads: “yuqassiru” (he shortens). (7) MSS C and D read: “wa qassa” (and he cut). (8) Tahrir al-Tanbih, p. 271: al-anmula (fingertip) has nine vocalisations: the hamza may carry fat-ha, damma, or kasra, each combined with the three vowelings of the mim. The most common and correct is fat-ha on the hamza with damma on the mim. Lexicographers define al-anamila as the ends of the fingers.
