—in their own eyes—as vast as the mountains of Tihāmah, yet when they are placed on the scale they will not weigh anything at all. (1)
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also said: “A bulky, corpulent man will be brought forward, but with Allah he will not weigh even the husk of a single grain of barley. The angel will then hurl seventy thousand of such people into the Fire.” (2)
And in another report he looked at the shins of Ibn Masʿūd, noticed how slender they were, and declared, “On the Day of Resurrection they will weigh on the scale more than Mount Uḥud.” (3)
This indicates that the weighing may apply to the people themselves.
Some commentators say that the verse means: “They will have no weight or value whatsoever with Us.” Others say: “No scale will even be set up for them,” (4) for the scale is erected only for the monotheists who have both good deeds and misdeeds. As for these people, Allah has stated elsewhere that their scales are light.
