Mustafa Dib al-Bugha

Full name: Mustafa Dib al-Bugha al-Maydani ad-Dimashqi ash-Shafi'i. His kunya is Abu Muhammad al-Hasan (after his eldest son Dr. Muhammad al-Hasan).

Birth: He was born in Damascus — in the al-Maydan quarter — in 1938, where he grew up and spent his youth. He is therefore today (1447 H) approximately 88 years old.

His status: He is a living contemporary Syrian scholar, may Allah preserve him, bless his time and his works, and grant him a good ending. Amin.

His place in the Umma: Mustafa Dib al-Bugha (born 1938) is a Syrian Sunni religious scholar, and among the most eminent Shafi'i jurists of Syria. He holds a doctorate in Islamic fiqh from al-Azhar. He was a professor at the Faculty of Shari'a of the University of Damascus and its vice-dean. He has composed many fiqh books and has preached in several mosques of the Sham. He is a major figure of the contemporary Damascene school of Shafi'i fiqh, a direct heir to the great revival that the al-Maydan quarter in Damascus experienced in the mid-twentieth century under the influence of Sheikh Hasan Habannaka al-Maydani (may Allah have mercy on him).
