In sum, every woman is required to conceal herself with a jilbāb when she leaves her home, with no distinction between freewomen and bondwomen. They may uncover only the face and the hands, for that was the established practice in the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime and he endorsed it.
It is useful at this point to supply what was omitted in the earlier editions—early reports showing that this remained the norm after the Prophet ﷺ as well. I therefore say:
1- Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim related:
“I entered, together with my father, upon Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). He was a fair-skinned, slight man, and with him was Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays fanning the flies away from him. She was a fair-complexioned woman whose hands were tattooed in the pre-Islamic period in a style resembling that of the Berbers. Two horses were brought before him, and he approved of them; he mounted me on one of them and my father on the other.”
