In this ḥadith there is a concession for women to let their lower garment trail, for that is more concealing for them. Al-Bayhaqī said, “In this is proof that a woman is obliged to cover her feet.”1
That is how women acted during the Prophet’s lifetime ﷺ and thereafter, and a number of legal rulings were derived from it. Mālik and others relate that a bond-woman of Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf once asked Umm Salamah, the Prophet’s wife: “I am a woman who lets her hem hang low, yet I must walk through dirty places—what should I do?” Umm Salamah replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Whatever follows it will cleanse it.’”
A woman from Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal reported: “I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, we have a foul-smelling path to the mosque; what should we do when it rains?’ He said, ‘Is there not another path after it that is cleaner?’ I answered, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Then that path cleanses the other.’”2
