the face and the hands.

Similarly, the Prophet ﷺ said, “Beware of sitting in the roadways. If you have no option but to sit, then give the road its due.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what is the road’s due?” He replied, “Lowering the gaze, refraining from causing harm, returning the greeting of peace, and enjoining what is right while forbidding what is wrong.” 1

He also said, “O ʿAli, do not follow one glance with another; the first is permitted for you, but the second is not.” 2

(1) Reported by al-Bukhari 11/9; Muslim 7/3; Abu Dawud 2/291; al-Bayhaqi 7/89; and Ahmad 3/36, on the authority of Abu Saʿid al-Khudri. Muslim and Ahmad (4/30) also transmitted it through Abu Talhah al-Ansari. (2) Narrated by Abu Dawud 1/335; al-Tirmidhi 4/14; al-Tahawi in Sharh al-Athar 2/8-9 and in al-Mushkil 2/352; al-Hakim 3/194—who deemed it sahih according to Muslim’s criterion, a judgment endorsed by al-Dhahabi; al-Bayhaqi 7/90; and Ahmad 5/353, 357, through the chain of Sharik → Abu Rabiʿah → Ibn Buraydah → his father, as a marfuʿ report. Al-Tirmidhi remarked, “This hadith is hasan gharib; we know it only through the narration of Sharik.” I note that Sharik is Sharik ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Qadi; although his memory was weak, the hadith has supporting chains. Indeed, al-Tahawi in both works, al-Hakim 3/123, and Ahmad nos. 1369, 1373 relate it via Hammad ibn Salamah → Muhammad ibn Ishaq → Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Taymi → Salamah ibn Abi Tufayl → ʿAli ibn Abi Talib. Al-Hakim declared this isnad sahih, and al-Dhahabi concurred. While Muhammad ibn Ishaq was a mudallis and transmits here with ʿanʿanah, the report is sound when both chains are combined, and it is further corroborated by the following hadith.
