Jilbab al-Marah al-Muslimah fi al-Kitab wa al-SunnahNasir al-Din al-Albani

and juyub is the plural of jayb—the opening cut into a coat or shirt, the word deriving from jawb (to cut). Accordingly, Allah commanded that the khimar be draped over the neck and chest, indicating that these two areas must be covered. He did not command that it be placed over the face, which shows that the face is not part of the ʿawrah. For this reason Ibn Ḥazm said in al-Muḥallā (3/216–217):

“Allah, exalted be He, instructed them to draw the khimar over their juyub. This is an explicit text obligating the concealment of the bosom, neck, and chest, and it is equally an explicit text permitting the exposure of the face—there is simply no other possible interpretation.”

al-Tanukhi relates that he once recited: Qul lil-maliha fi-l-khimar al-mudhahhab, Afsadti nuskha akhi al-taqi al-mudhahhab; Nur al-khimar wa-nur khaddiki tahtahu, ‘Ajaban li-wajhiki kayfa lam yatalahhab. He thus portrays her khimar as covering her face as well. I reply: this in no way conflicts with the definition of khimar already given, for the fact that it may occasionally be drawn over the face does not make that its normal function. Note that when the Prophet, peace be upon him, seated Safiyya behind him, he placed his cloak over her back and face (see p. 94); and ‘Aisha said in the account of the slander, “So I covered my face with my jilbab” (see p. 106). Would anyone therefore claim that a cloak or a jilbab is by definition a garment that habitually covers the face? By the same token, the poet’s lines cannot be taken as proof that a khimar is something that covers both head and face. The most that can be said is that the face may sometimes be veiled with it, just as it might be with a cloak, jilbab, mantle, or any other garment. All of this is said on the assumption that the poet’s description is literal. More likely, it is merely imaginative poetic imagery, and no firm lexical meaning can be built upon it.
