and I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When he concluded the prayer, he sat upon the pulpit and said: “By Allah, I have not gathered you out of hope for something nor out of fear; rather, I have brought you together because Tamīm al-Dārī, who was formerly a Christian, came, gave the pledge of allegiance, and embraced Islam. He related to me a report that accords with what I have been telling you about al-Masīḥ al-Dajjāl (the Antichrist).” – end of the ḥadīth.
It should be understood that this incident occurred near the end of the Prophet’s ﷺ life, for Fāṭimah bint Qays stated that after her waiting period had finished she heard the Prophet ﷺ speaking about the story of Tamīm al-Dārī and that he had come and accepted Islam. Tamīm’s biography confirms that he embraced Islam in the year 9 AH, which shows that the event took place after the revelation of the Jilbāb verse. The ḥadīth, therefore, is an explicit textual proof that the face is not ʿawrah (i.e. not part of what must be covered).
