one may reply that the report gains strength through its many transmission routes, and al-Bayhaqi has actually rated it reliable, as will be shown below. In that case it becomes an acceptable proof for the aforementioned permissibility—particularly since a great number of women in the Prophet’s lifetime used to uncover their faces and hands in his presence, and he did not object. Several hadiths bear this out; we shall now mention those that occur to us:
and 7/86. Al-Tabarani also records it in Musnad al-Shamiyyin, pp. 511–12, and Ibn ‘Adi in al-Kamil, 3/1209, through the chain Sa‘id b. Bishr → Qatadah → Khalid b. Durayk → ‘Aishah. (Ibn ‘Adi notes that on one occasion the narrator said “from Umm Salamah” instead of “‘Aishah.”) Abu Dawud then remarked:
“This is mursal; Khalid b. Durayk did not meet ‘Aishah.”
I add: Sa‘id b. Bishr is weak, as Ibn Hajar states in al-Taqrib. Even so, the report is supported by other routes:
1. Abu Dawud relates in his Marasil, no. 437 (cited above), with a sound isnad from Qatadah that the Prophet ﷺ said: “When a girl begins menstruating, only her face and her hands up to the wrist may be seen.”
I comment: This is a sound mursal that is reinforced by what follows; it contains neither Ibn Durayk nor Ibn Bishr.
2. Al-Tabarani narrates in al-Kabir (24/143/378) and al-Awsat (2/230/8959), and al-Bayhaqi likewise, through Ibn Lahiyah → ‘Iyad b. ‘Abd Allah → Ibrahim b. ‘Ubayd b. Rifa‘ah al-Ansari, reporting from his father—apparently from Asma’ bt. ‘Umays—that she said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon ‘Aishah bt. Abi Bakr while her sister Asma’ bt. Abi Bakr was with her, wearing Syrian clothes with wide sleeves. When the Prophet ﷺ looked at her he rose and left. ‘Aishah said to Asma’: ‘Move away; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has seen something he dislikes.’ So she moved aside. The Prophet ﷺ then re-entered, and ‘Aishah asked him, ‘Why did you stand up?’ He replied: ‘Did you not see…’
