With that, our discussion of the conditions that must be fulfilled in a woman’s clothing and outer wrap comes to a close. In brief, the garment must:
- Cover her entire body except for the face and hands, as detailed previously;
- Not itself constitute an adornment;
- Not be transparent;
- Not be so tight that it outlines her figure;
- Not be perfumed;
- Not resemble the dress of men or of non-Muslims; and
- Not be a garment worn for ostentation.
Every Muslim is therefore obliged to make sure that all these conditions are met in his wife’s attire and in the dress of every woman under his guardianship, for the Prophet ﷺ said, “Each of you is a shepherd and each of you will be questioned about his flock.”
Allah the Exalted says:
“O you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are angels, stern and mighty, who do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do whatever they are commanded.” (al-Tahrim 6).
= Its chain is sound, but the report is mursal, for this Kinanah is a tabi‘i, Kinanah b. Na‘im. Al-Tabarani related a similar narration from Ibn ‘Umar with a chain that contains a transmitter accused of fabrication; see Da‘if al-Jami‘, 6/36.
Al-Shawkani comments:
“The hadith indicates the prohibition of wearing a garment of shuhra. This prohibition is not restricted to the garment itself; it may also apply to someone who wears clothes unlike those ordinarily worn by poor people so that onlookers marvel at his dress and form an opinion of him—so said Ibn Ruslan.
“If the aim in wearing the garment is self-advertisement, no distinction exists between expensive and shabby attire, or between clothes that match people’s dress and those that differ from it, for the prohibition turns on the quest for notoriety. What counts is the intention, even if the outward reality does not correspond to it.”
