In Nayl al-Awtar the name appears as “al-Bassami,” which is a copyist’s error. Ibn Hibban rated him trustworthy (5/428; 7/486), and several reliable narrators transmitted from him.
The two compilers also record the report through Sharik, from Uthman, but without the phrase, “then he kindled a fire in it.” Ahmad likewise narrated it (nos. 5664, 6345); al-Mundhiri, in his abridgement (no. 3871), attributes it to al-Nasa’i as well, and al-Manawi notes that, in al-Nasa’i’s collection, it is placed in the chapter “al-Zinah” (Adornment). I could not find it in his Sunan al-Sughra, so it is apparently in his Sunan al-Kubra—when that work was published the hadith was indeed located in the “Adornment” section (5/460, no. 9560).
The hadith has a supporting chain from Abu Dharr, recorded with the wording: “Whoever wears a garment of shuhra, Allah will turn away from him until he takes it off, whenever he takes it off.” Ibn Majah included it, and Abu Nuaym cited it in al-Hilya (4/190-191) through Waki b. Muhzir al-Naji, who said: “Uthman b. Juhm narrated to us from Zur b. Hubaysh, from him.” Abu Nuaym remarks that Waki is the lone transmitter of this version.
I note that Waki is unobjectionable, as Abu Hatim and others state; however, his shaykh Uthman b. Juhm is known only through this very Waki, as al-Mizan records, so he counts among the unknown narrators. Although Ibn Hibban listed him among the trustworthy (7/202) in keeping with his general practice, this shows that al-Busayri’s verdict in al-Zawaid (f. 218/1) that “its chain is hasan” is inaccurate—unless he meant “hasan through corroboration,” which would be acceptable. Perhaps for this reason al-Maqdisi included it in al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah. Allah knows best.
Al-Bayhaqi (2/273) also reports—through Kinanah—that the Prophet forbade two forms of shuhra: wearing eye-catching finery and wearing shabby, ragged clothes that likewise draw attention.
