Condition Eight: that the clothing not be a garment of ostentatious display 1:
On the authority of Ibn ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Whoever wears a garment of ostentation in this world, Allah will clothe him in a garment of humiliation on the Day of Resurrection, then set it ablaze.” 2.
(1) This refers to any garment worn to attract public attention, whether it is an expensive robe donned out of worldly pride and display, or a coarse garment worn to feign asceticism and impress others. Al-Shawkani writes in Nayl al-Awtar, 2/94: “Ibn al-Athir says: shuhra (prominence) is the appearance of a thing; what is meant here is that a person’s garment becomes conspicuous among the people because its color differs from theirs, so they raise their eyes toward him and he struts before them in self-admiration and arrogance.”
(2) Reported by Abu Dawud, 2/172, and Ibn Majah, 2/278-279, through Abu Awana → Uthman ibn al-Mughira → al-Muhajir → [the Companion]. Al-Mundhiri (al-Targhib, 3/112) grades the chain as hasan, and Shawkani affirms that its transmitters are trustworthy. I add: all of them are narrators found in al-Bukhari except al-Muhajir, namely Ibn Amr al-Shami.
الشرط الثامن: "أن لا يكون لباس شهرة" ١:
لحديث ابن عمر ﵁ قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ:
"من لبس ثوب شهرة في الدنيا، ألبسه الله ثوب مذلة يوم القيامة، ثم ألهب فيه نارًا" ٢.
١ وهو كل ثوب يقصد به الاشتهار بين الناس، سواء كان الثوب نفيسًا يلبسه تفاخرًا بالدنيا وزينتها، أو خسيسًا يلبسه إظهارًا للزهد والرياء. وقال الشوكاني في "نيل الأوطار" "٢/ ٩٤":
"قال ابن الأثير: الشهرة ظهور الشيء، والمراد أن ثوبه يشتهر بين الناس لمخالفة لونه لألوان ثيابهم فيرفع الناس إليه أبصارهم، ويختال عليهم بالعجب والتكبر".

وهذا إسناد حسن كما قال المنذري في "الترغيب" "٣/ ١١٢"، ورجال إسناده ثقات كما قال الشوكاني.
