that when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out for Hunayn he passed by a tree that belonged to the idolaters, known as Dhāt Anwāṭ, on which they used to hang their weapons and around which they would gather. They said, “O Messenger of Allah, designate for us a Dhāt Anwāṭ just as they have a Dhāt Anwāṭ.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, “Glory be to Allah!”—and in another narration, “Allah is Most Great!”—“This is exactly what the people of Moses said: ‘Make for us a god just as they have gods.’ By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you will indeed follow the ways of those who came before you, step by step.”
3- From ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar: he said, The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
3) It was recorded by Ahmad (nos. 5114, 5115, 5667), by al-Khatib in al-Faqih wa-l-mutafaqqih 2/73, and by Ibn Asakir 19/96/1, through the route of Abd al-Rahman ibn Thabit ibn Thawban, who said: “Hasan ibn Atiyya narrated to us from Abu Munib al-Jurashi, from him.”
This isnad is hasan; the reservations some have expressed about Ibn Thabit do not harm it. Al-Bukhari cited part of it in his Sahih 6/75, and al-Hafiz, in his commentary, wrote: “It is an excerpt from a hadith that Ahmad transmitted via Abu Munib… It has a supporting mursal report with a hasan chain, produced by Ibn Abi Shayba through al-Awza‘i from Sa‘id ibn Jubla, from the Prophet ﷺ in full.”
I add: Abu Dawud transmitted the last portion of it (2/173) through Ibn Thabit as well. Ibn Taymiyya, in Iqtida, p. 39, said: “Its isnad is good.” Al-Hafiz al-‘Iraqi, in Takhrij al-Ihya 1/342, stated: “Its chain is sahih.” Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar likewise said in Fath 10/222:
