Jilbab al-Marah al-Muslimah fi al-Kitab wa al-SunnahNasir al-Din al-Albani

so say: “the servant of Allah and His Messenger.”

among others, and this verifies the Prophet’s ﷺ saying: “You will surely follow the ways of those before you, span by span and cubit by cubit, so much so that if they entered a lizard’s hole you would follow them.” Agreed upon; also cited in Zilal al-Janna, 72–75. I add: Nevertheless, we still hear some people chanting these lines to the Prophet ﷺ: “From your generosity come this world and the next, and from your knowledge flows the knowledge of the Tablet and the Pen.” This is shirk (association) in certain divine attributes: just as Allah is unique in His lordship (rububiyya) and in His right to be worshipped (uluhiyya), He is likewise unique in His attributes; no created being, however lofty his rank, shares any of them. Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the leader of humankind, once heard a young girl innocently singing: “In our midst is a prophet who knows what tomorrow will bring.” He said to her ﷺ, “Leave this, and keep singing what you were singing.” Reported by al-Bukhari and others. How different is that girl’s verse from the line that many Muslims have been repeating for centuries: “and from your knowledge flows the knowledge of the Tablet and the Pen.” In their view he does not merely know tomorrow; he knows everything that was and will be, all that the Pen has inscribed in the Preserved Tablet—and that is but a portion of his knowledge! Exalted are You, this is a tremendous calumny and a manifest sin. Anyone who has browsed Sufi writings—what they call “realities”—or the literature of mawlid celebrations and the like will find astonishing examples of this trend. Many people who wish to think well of everyone imagine that those who utter such praises do not intend the literal meaning, and that most of them never even consider it. We would love that to be true, but “not everything a person wishes for is attained.” We have heard from individuals regarded as learned and pious statements that compel us
