“Beware of these two marked dice1 that people hurl so vigorously, for they are the gambling device of the non-Arabs.”
“Assorted Traditions”:
1- ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say,
“Do not lavish praise upon me2 as the Christians lavished praise upon Jesus, son of Mary; I am only a servant of Allah,
(1) This is the exact wording found in the sources; it follows the dialect that keeps the dual noun on alif, a sound and well-attested usage.
(1-) It was transmitted by al-Bukhari (6/381; 12/124); al-Tirmidhi in al-Shama’il (2/161); al-Darimi (2/320); al-Tayalisi (no. 25); and Ahmad (nos. 154, 164, 331, 391).
(2) The first letter carries a ḍamma; the word derives from itiraʾ (exaggerated praise). Al-Manawi, commenting on al-Shama’il, writes: “It refers to over-praising and excess. The meaning is: do not exceed the bounds in praising me by attributing what is untrue, lest you be led into disbelief as the Christians were when they went to extremes in praising Jesus, peace be upon him, with what was untrue and made him a deity. The comparison in the phrase ‘as the Christians exaggerated about Jesus’ concerns their claim of divinity, but it may also include ascribing to him what he does not possess, which makes the warning broader.”
I say: This is the correct view, for it is self-evident that the Christians exaggerated about Jesus, peace be upon him, in matters other than divinity as well. Hence, when Muslims praise the Prophet ﷺ by attributing to him what he does not possess, they are imitating the Christians, and the practice is forbidden for two reasons:
1) It is, in itself, a falsehood, and the Prophet ﷺ is far above being praised with lies.
2) It blocks the means, out of fear that such exaggeration may lead to the kind of claims of divinity and the like made by the Christians about their prophet. Some Muslims have nevertheless fallen into this, despite the explicit warning of the hadith
