the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by me while I was seated like this—I had placed my left hand behind my back and was leaning on the base of that hand—and he said, “Do you sit in the manner of those who have incurred wrath?!”
- Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
for Ibn Jurayj explicitly stated that he heard it.
2) Yet the hadith is also found in Abd al-Razzaq, as quoted in Kitab al-ahkam by Abd al-Haqq al-Ishbili, no. 1284 (in my critical edition). I later located it exactly as Abd al-Haqq cited in the Musannaf of Abd al-Razzaq, 2/198, no. 3057; the defect is thus removed and the report is authentic, praise be to Allah.
Abd al-Razzaq likewise transmits (10/415, no. 19542) from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir that “the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade a person to lean on his left hand while eating.” All the narrators are trustworthy, but the isnad is mu‘dal (two consecutive links are missing). Even so, the broad purport of the previous narration supports it. Allah knows best.
A further corroboration is the hadith of Ibn Umar: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man resting his hand flat on the ground in prayer and said, “Do not sit like this; this posture belongs to those who are being punished.” Ahmad records it (no. 5972) with a good, sound chain; it has already been cited under “Prayer,” no. 7, p. 173.
3) A fair hadith, reported by al-Dulabi in al-Kuna, 2/137, through Abu al-Tayyib Harun ibn Muhammad: Bakir ibn Simar narrated from Amir ibn Sa‘d, from Sa‘d— the original reads “Sa‘id,” a scribal error—who related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Allah is clean and loves cleanliness, generous and loves generosity, noble and loves nobility, good and loves goodness; so be clean …” and so forth. All the transmitters are reliable except Abu al-Tayyib Harun ibn Muhammad, who is extremely weak.
