“The idolaters would not move on from Jamʿ1 until the sun rose over Thabir,2 chanting, ‘Rise, Thabir, so that we may press forward!’ The Prophet ﷺ, however, differed from them and left before sunrise.”
And in the section on Sacrificial Animals:
1 – Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj said:
who said:
“The Messenger of Allah addressed us at Arafah, praised and extolled Allah, and then said: ‘To proceed: the idol-worshippers and polytheists used to leave from here at sunset, waiting until the sun rested on the tops of the mountains like men’s turbans; our practice is contrary to theirs.’ ”
Al-Hakim also recorded it (2/277; 3/523) and declared, “Sound according to the criteria of the Two Shaykhs.” Al-Dhahabi concurred, yet the grading is questionable on two grounds:
1. Muhammad ibn Qays ibn Makhrama is not cited at all by al-Bukhari.
2. Ibn Jurayj was known for tadlis, as al-Dhahabi himself states in al-Mizan, and Ahmad said, “When he says, ‘he informed us’ or ‘I heard,’ that is sufficient.” Here, however, he transmits with the ambiguous “from,” which is a defect.
Al-Haythami listed the hadith in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (3/255) with wording identical to al-Hakim’s version, adding: “Al-Tabarani reported it in al-Kabir, and its transmitters are those of the Sahih.”
(1) i.e. Muzdalifah; it is said to have been so named because, when Adam and Hawwa (Eve) were cast down to earth, they met there.
(2) A well-known mountain near Mecca.
1– Reported by al-Bukhari (9/513–517, 553) and Muslim (6/78–79).
