Jilbab al-Marah al-Muslimah fi al-Kitab wa al-SunnahNasir al-Din al-Albani

from the section on Prayer:

  1. Abu ʿUmair ibn Anas, narrating from a number of his Ansari uncles, said:
“The Prophet ﷺ was preoccupied with the prayer and how to gather the people for it. Someone suggested, ‘Raise a banner when the time for prayer comes; once they see it, they will notify one another,’ but he did not like that. Mention was then made of the qunʿ, meaning the shabbūr—and in another wording, ‘the trumpet of the Jews’1—but he disliked that too, saying, ‘That is something the Jews do.’ Next the clapper-bell (nāqūs) was proposed, and he said, ‘That is something the Christians do.’ ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd ibn ʿAbd Rabbih then went away, still troubled by what concerned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the call to prayer (adhān) was shown to him in a dream.” The report continues.2
(1) That is, the bugle (trumpet). (2) The report is authentic; we cited it in our Sahih Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 511, together with the scholars who declared it sound. Its relevance is clear, and—as Shaykh al-Islam explains (p. 56): “When the Prophet ﷺ expressed dislike for the Jews’ buq (mouth-blown trumpet) and the Christians’ naqus (hand-struck clapper), he justified his aversion by noting that each is a communal emblem. This entails a prohibition against adopting anything characteristic of the Jews or the Christians. It is said that the Jewish horn originated with Musa (Moses), upon him be peace, who used to sound a trumpet in his time, whereas the Christians’ clapper is an innovation, for most of their rites were later introduced by their priests and monks. The hadith therefore indicates disapproval of this kind of sound altogether, even outside the prayer, because it belongs to the customs of the Jews and Christians; the Christians, for example, ring their bells at many times other than during worship. The emblem of the pure religion is the adhan, which publicly proclaims the remembrance of Allah—through it the gates of heaven are opened, devils flee, and mercy descends.”
