and, on the other hand, the reports that speak of men imitating women are general—they cover clothing and everything else—whereas only the first ḥadīth is confined to dress alone. Abū Dāwūd writes in “Masāʾil al-Imām Aḥmad,” p. 261:
“I heard Aḥmad being asked about a man who puts a qurṭuq 1 on his bond-woman. He answered, ‘He must not dress her in men’s attire, nor make her resemble men.’”
Abū Dāwūd adds:
“I said to Aḥmad, ‘May he have her wear ṣarrārah sandals?’ He replied, ‘No—unless she uses them only for ablution.’ I asked, ‘For adornment?’ He said, ‘No.’ I asked, ‘May he crop her hair short?’ He said, ‘No.’” 2
(1) Al-Nihayah states: “A boy came wearing a white qurtuq, i.e., a qaba (long robe). The term is the Arabized form of kartak, and its ta may also be read with dammah.”
(2) It seems clear that what Imam Ahmad meant here by jaz was shaving the hair off completely. Al-jazz—with a jim and an emphatic zay—denotes cutting hair or wool down to the skin, as explained in Fath, 10/285. A direct prohibition of this appears in the hadith reported by al-Nasa’i (2/276) and al-Tirmidhi (2/109) from Ali: “The Messenger of Allah forbade a woman to shave her head.” The chain would be sound but for the narrator’s wavering between transmitting it connected and mursal; even the normally lenient Tirmidhi therefore judged it defective. I have gathered all the routes I could find and discussed them in al-Daifah, no. 678. Hence Ahmad’s objection to a woman’s jaz of her hair refers to shaving it off, which is different from =
