Jilbab al-Marah al-Muslimah fi al-Kitab wa al-SunnahNasir al-Din al-Albani

2 – ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, “Whoever among the women imitates men, and whoever among the men imitates women, is not one of us.”

(2) Ahmad records the hadith (2:199–200) with the chain: “ʿAbd al-Razzaq narrated to us; ʿUmar b. Hushab—an upright man—reported to me from ʿAmr b. Dinar, from ʿAta, from a man of the Hudhayl tribe, who said: ‘I saw ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿAs—his residence was outside the sanctuary while his mosque was inside it. While I was with him he noticed Umm Saʿid, daughter of Abu Jahl, carrying a bow across her shoulder and walking like a man. ʿAbd Allah asked, “Who is this woman?” I replied, “She is Umm Saʿid, daughter of Abu Jahl.” He said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him…”’ and he cited the hadith.” I say: The transmitters in this isnad are reliable except for the unidentified narrator, who is not named—as al-Mundhiri remarked (3:106); al-Haythami followed him (8:103) and added, “I do not know the Hudhali.” Al-Tabarani relates a shorter version that omits the unnamed Hudhali; thus all of al-Tabarani’s transmitters are trustworthy. Abu Nuʿaym likewise cites it in Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ (3:321) through Ahmad, omitting the anonymous narrator and abbreviating the story to the Prophet’s wording alone. Al-Hafiz states in Taʿjil (p. 200, no. 495) that al-Bukhari—in his Tarikh—records it through ʿAmr b. Dinar, from ʿAta, who said: “I heard Ibn ʿUmar”—so in the manuscript; perhaps the conjunction waw has dropped—“say: I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, declare: ‘Whoever among women imitates men is not of us.’” Thus ʿAta—who is ʿAta b. Yasar—explicitly affirms that he heard the hadith from Ibn ʿAmr, so the chain becomes fully connected and sound. It is possible that ʿAta transmitted the report both through the Hudhali with its accompanying incident from Ibn ʿAmr, and directly from Ibn ʿAmr without the story. Allah knows best.
