Condition Five: “It must not be scented with incense or perfume.”
Numerous hadiths prohibit women from perfuming themselves when they leave their homes. We now present those whose chains of transmission are sound:
1- Abu Musa al-Ashʿari reported that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “Any woman who applies perfume and then passes by people so that they smell her fragrance is an adulteress.”
2- Zaynab al-Thaqafiyyah reported that the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:
(1) Recorded by al-Nasaʾi 2/283; likewise by Abu Dawud 2/192; al-Tirmidhi 4/17 (with al-Mubarakfuri’s commentary); al-Hakim 2/396; Ahmad 4/400 and 413; Ibn Khuzaymah 3/91/1681; and Ibn Hibban, Mawrid no. 1474. Al-Tirmidhi judged it hasan sahih, and al-Hakim declared its isnad sahih—a verdict endorsed by al-Dhahabi. I add: the chain is hasan.
(2) Recorded by Muslim and Abu Awana in their Sahih collections, by the authors of the Sunan, and by others. I have analyzed its chains in al-Thamar al-Mustatab and later in al-Sahihah, no. 1094.
