So look at Fāṭimah—part of the very flesh of the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace)—how she found it repugnant that even a shroud should outline a woman’s form when she is dead. How much more loathsome, then, that clothing should define her shape while she is alive! Let the Muslim women of our age take heed—those who wear tight garments that reveal their chests, waists, hips, legs, and other parts of the body. Let them ask Allah Most High for forgiveness, repent to Him, and remember his words (Allah bless him and grant him peace): “Modesty and faith are inseparable; when one of them is taken away, the other departs as well.”¹
Muhammad ibn Musa al-Makhzumi, transmitting from Awn ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, from his mother Umm Jaʿfar bint Muhammad ibn Jaʿfar, and (also) from ʿImarah ibn al-Muhajir, from Umm Jaʿfar. Al-Bayhaqi (3/396) records only the final portion—“O Asmaʾ, when I die …” and so on—through another chain going back to Qutaybah ibn Saʿid and ʿAbd Allah ibn Nafiʿ, both from Muhammad ibn Musa, although Ibn Nafiʿ omits the name ʿImarah ibn al-Muhajir. Ibn al-Turkumani comments: “The isnad contains narrators whose reliability still needs to be clarified.” I add: those narrators are al-Makhzumi, ʿAwn ibn Muhammad, and ʿImarah; I have found no biographical entry for any of them. As for Umm Jaʿfar, she is mentioned in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib and elsewhere, and she is also known as Umm ʿAwn.
The hadith is also reported from Asmaʾ in another wording. Al-Tabarani, in al-Awsat, transmits that a daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died and at that time men and women alike were carried on open litters. Asmaʾ said: “Messenger of Allah, when I lived in Abyssinia among the Christian People of the Book, they placed over a woman a wooden bier above her ribs because they disliked that any part of her figure be seen. May I make a similar bier for your daughter?” He replied, “Do so.” She thus became the first person for whom such a covered bier was made in Islam; it was for Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Al-Haythami remarks in Majmaʿ (3/26): “Its chain contains Khalaf ibn Rashid, who is unknown.”
(1) Related by al-Hakim (1/22) and Abu Nuʿaym (4/297) from Ibn ʿUmar. Al-Hakim judged it “sound according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim,” and al-Dhahabi concurred; the ruling is correct.
