when it is thick, if by nature it is soft and folds around the body, like certain silk and broad-cloth garments familiar in our own day. For that very reason the Prophet ﷺ instructed that a slip be worn beneath it. Allah knows best.
The Shāfiʿīs advanced an unusual view, saying, “If the cloth conceals the skin’s color yet still outlines the size of the limbs, there is no objection—just as if one were to wear tight trousers.” They added, “It is recommended for a woman to pray in a long shirt and a khimār, and to place a dense jilbāb over her clothing so that it hangs away from her and the outline of her limbs is not discernible.”⦗1⦘
(1) Al-Rafi‘i mentions this view in his Commentary, vol. 4, pp. 92 and 105 (Sharh al-Muhadhdhab).
I comment: On their understanding, a woman today could go out wearing tight clothing that clings to the body and describes it in exact detail—so much so that someone at a distance might think she is naked—such as the flesh-coloured stockings that reveal the shape of the calves and thighs and even enhance their beauty, or the tibban (brief undergarment) that outlines the private parts themselves. If a woman wore such garments, they would judge it permissible because the colour of the skin is covered, even though the garment gives her a more attractive hue than her natural one! Can any Muslim today really deem this lawful? This is one of many indications that ijtihad (independent reasoning) is obligatory and that blind imitation must be left behind—will anyone take note?
On this occasion I add: Many believing young women take great pains to cover the upper part of the body—the head—so they conceal the hair and the upper chest, yet neglect what lies below, wearing tight or short clothes that do not extend beyond mid-calf, or covering the rest with flesh-coloured stockings that make it even more alluring. Some even pray dressed like this. Such attire is impermissible; they must hasten to complete their covering as Allah has commanded, following the example of the earliest female emigrants (the first Muhajir women).
