Jilbab al-Marah al-Muslimah fi al-Kitab wa al-SunnahNasir al-Din al-Albani

Hisham b. ʿUrwah narrated:

“Al-Mundhir b. al-Zubayr returned from Iraq and sent Asmaʾ bint Abi Bakr a set of garments woven from Marwiyya and Quhiyya cloth1—light, fine pieces—after she had lost her sight. He said: She felt them with her hand and then exclaimed, ‘Uff! Send his clothes back to him.’ This pained him, and he said, ‘Mother, they are not transparent.’ She replied, ‘Even if they are not transparent, they still outline the body.’⦗2⦘

ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Salama reported:

“ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allah be pleased with him, once distributed garments of al-qabāṭī3 to the people, and then said:

(1) Marawiyya: a style of garment famous in Iraq, so called after Marw, a village near Kufa. Qawhiyya: cloth woven in Quhistan, a district of Khurasan, as stated by al-Samani in al-Ansab. (2) Ibn Saʿd transmits it (8/184) with a sound chain up to al-Munzir. Ibn Hibban lists him among the Thiqat (5/420) and notes: “Muhammad b. al-Munzir reported from him.” I add: his nephew Hisham b. ʿUrwa also narrates from him, as does his wife Fatima bt. al-Munzir b. al-Zubayr. Taʿjil further records that he reported from his father, while Falyh b. Muhammad b. al-Munzir and others reported from him; Hakim b. Hizam praised him. The isnad is therefore sound and uninterrupted. (3) Plural of qubatiyya. Al-Nihaya explains: “It is a fine, white Egyptian cloth, apparently named after the Qibt (Copts), the people of Egypt; the damma on the qaf reflects a morphological shift in the nisba form. This applies to textiles; for a person the word is qubti, with a kasra.”
