Umm ʿAlqama bint Abi ʿAlqama reported: “I saw Hafsa bint ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Abi Bakr come in to ʿAʾisha wearing a thin khimār (head covering) that showed her forehead. ʿAʾisha tore it, saying, ‘Do you not know what Allah revealed in Sūrah al-Nūr?’ She then asked for a khimār and clothed her with it.”⦗2⦘

(1) Al-Suyuti reproduces the report in Tanwir al-Hawalik, 3/103. (2) Ibn Saʿd relates it (8/46): “Khalid b. Makhlad—Sulayman b. Bilal—from ʿAlqama b. Abi ʿAlqama—from his mother.” Everyone in the chain satisfies the conditions of the two Sahihs except this Umm ʿAlqama—whose name is Marjana. Ibn Hibban includes her among the Thiqat (5/466), but al-Dhahabi says, “Unknown.” I therefore hold that she cannot serve as an independent proof; her narration is usable only for corroboration. Bukhari’s citing her report in hanging form does not mean he deemed her reliable, contrary to the impression created by Mawlana Mawdudi in his critique (p. 16). Malik also transmits a shortened version from ʿAlqama (3/103) which contains the phrase, “and she clothed her with a thick khimar (head-cover).” Through Malik’s route the report is likewise found in Ibn Saʿd and in al-Bayhaqi (2/235). Al-Dhahabi remains silent on it in his Mukhtasar (1/40/1), yet elsewhere on the same isnad (1/63/2) he writes, “a strong chain”—an assessment that is questionable in light of his own remark in al-Mizan, “Umm ʿAlqama is unknown.” ʿAʾisha’s statement, “Do you not know what Allah revealed in Surat al-Nur?,” indicates that a woman who covers herself with a transparent garment is, in fact, uncovered and has not obeyed the verse in question: “and let them draw their khimars over their bosoms” (24:31). The point is obvious. Note: The entire report, in both Malik’s and Ibn Saʿd’s versions, hinges on this same Umm ʿAlqama. Saʿid b. Mansur and Ibn Marduyah narrate it with wording identical to Ibn Saʿd’s, but without naming the woman who entered upon ʿAʾisha. Mawlana Mawdudi mistakenly thought this constituted a report other than Malik’s transmission from Umm ʿAlqama and treated it as independent corroboration, whereas in reality the chain is one and the same.
