even when that cloak happens to be dyed in a color other than white or black, contrary to what some conscientious women imagine. This is clarified by two considerations:
First: the Prophet ﷺ said, “The perfume suited to women is that whose color is evident while its scent remains subtle.” This hadith is recorded in Mukhtaṣar al-Shamāʾil, 188.
Second: the continuous practice of the female Companions confirms the same point. I shall cite a few authentic reports preserved by al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Abī Shaybah in his al-Muṣannaf 8/371-372:
-
From Ibrāhīm—meaning al-Nakhaʿī: he would enter, together with ʿAlqamah and al-Aswad, upon the wives of the Prophet ﷺ and would see them wrapped in red mantles.
-
From Ibn Abī Mulaykah who said: “I saw Umm Salamah wearing a tunic and a wrap, both dyed with safflower.”
