Jilbab al-Marah al-Muslimah fi al-Kitab wa al-SunnahNasir al-Din al-Albani

“Riders would pass by us while we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a state of iḥrām (pilgrimage consecration). Whenever they came abreast of us, each of us would let her jilbāb (outer wrap) fall from the top of her head over her face; when they had gone on, we would lift it again.”

5- Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr said: “We used to cover our faces in the presence of men, and—while in iḥrām—we would also comb our hair beforehand.”

6- Ṣafiyyah bint Shaybah said: “I saw ʿĀʾishah circumambulating the House while wearing a niqāb (face veil).”

7- ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar said:

(5) Al-Hakim recorded it (1:454) and stated, “This hadith is sound according to the criteria of the two shaykhs.” Al-Dhahabi concurred, yet in fact it meets only Muslim’s criteria, because Zakariya b. Adi—who appears in the chain—was cited by al-Bukhari only outside the Sahih, as indicated in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib. Malik also transmitted a similar wording (1:305) on the authority of Fatima bint al-Mundhir. The verb nughatti here means “to let the garment hang down,” just as in the preceding hadith. (6) Ibn Saʿd related it (8:49), and so did ʿAbd al-Razzaq in his Musannaf (5:24–25), through Ibn Jurayj → al-Hasan b. Muslim → Safiya. All transmitters in the chain are reliable, but Ibn Jurayj practiced tadlis and has narrated here with an ʿanʿanah. (7) Ibn Saʿd recorded it (8:90): “Ahmad b. Muhammad b. al-Walid al-Azraqi told us; ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Abi al-Rijal narrated from him … .” The chain’s narrators are trustworthy, yet there is a break between Ibn Abi al-Rijal and Ibn ʿUmar. It is, however, supported by a mursal report from ʿAtaʾ with similar wording, cited by Abu Mansur b. ʿAsakir in al-Arbaʿin fi Manaqib Ummahat al-Muʾminin (p. 89). Ibn Saʿd also gives it through two further routes that both revolve around al-Waqidi, who is weak, as noted earlier. He likewise (8:181) transmits—through al-Waqidi—that Hind bint ʿUtba removed her face-veil when she pledged allegiance to the Prophet. Ibn Mandah brings yet another chain, mentioned in her entry in al-Isaba (4:409).
