The gist of the author’s discussion regarding the rulings on these practices is as follows:
-
Ruqyah is of two kinds: permissible and impermissible. Permissible ruqyah is that which is entirely free of shirk, whereas any ruqyah that contains shirk is forbidden.
-
Tamā’im are likewise of two kinds. The first is unanimously prohibited: any amulet that involves shirk. The second, those made from Qur’anic verses, is disputed. Some scholars deemed them permissible, others ruled them forbidden, and the sounder view is that they are forbidden as a preventive measure and in reverence for the Qur’an.
-
Tiwala is unanimously prohibited, for it is a form of sorcery.
