Al-Mulakhkhas fi Sharh Kitab al-TawhidSalih Al-Fawzan

Tamā’im: an object hung on children to ward off the evil eye. If the item hung consists of Qur’anic passages, some of the early scholars permitted it, while others—among them Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him)—did not, counting it among the prohibited practices.

Ruqā (1): these are what are called ʿazāʾim. The evidence makes an exception for whatever is free of shirk, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ allowed such ruqyah for cases of the evil eye and poisonous stings (2).

Tiwala: a charm they fashion, claiming that it causes a wife to be more beloved to her husband and a husband to his wife.

— “hung on children”: i.e., around the necks of youngsters.
— “to ward off the evil eye”: meaning to prevent harm caused by an envious gaze.
— ʿAzāʾim: the plural of ʿazīmah; it is said that they are Qur’anic verses recited over the afflicted, recited over water that is then given to the patient to drink, or written in a dish and washed off so the resulting water can be drunk by the sick person.
— “made an exception from it”: i.e., excluded it from the general prohibition.
— “the evidence”: the Prophet’s statement ﷺ, “There is no ruqyah except for the evil eye or a poisonous sting,” as mentioned earlier in the chapter “Whoever Perfects Monotheism.”
— “whatever is free of shirk”: that is, incantations in which no help is sought from any but Allah, consisting solely of His names, attributes, Qur’anic verses, or formulas authentically transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ.
