and that it entails rejecting everything that is worshipped instead of Allah.
Lessons derived from the ḥadīth:
- The meaning of “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah” is to disbelieve in whatever is worshipped besides Allah—whether idols, graves, or anything else.
- Merely uttering “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah” without disavowing what is worshipped apart from Allah does not make one’s life and property inviolable, even if he knows its meaning and acts upon it, until he also renounces whatever is worshipped besides Allah.
- Whoever affirms monotheism and outwardly abides by its rulings must be left unharmed until something appears that contradicts this.
- The same obligation to refrain applies to a disbeliever who outwardly submits to those rulings; he is to be left alone until something contrary becomes evident.
- A person may say “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah” yet still not disbelieve in what is worshipped alongside Him.
- In this world judgments are based on outward appearances, whereas in the Hereafter they are based on intentions and aims.
- A Muslim’s wealth and blood are sacred except with just cause.
The author’s words, “and the explanation of this heading will follow in the subsequent chapters,” mean that the chapters coming after this one will clarify monotheism, elucidate the meaning of “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah,” and identify many manifestations of both minor and major polytheism, along with the excesses and innovations that lead to them—matters that must be abandoned in accordance with the very implications of the testimony of faith.
