Had they truly grasped that apart from their so-called equals, they would have abandoned the misguidance in which they were engulfed; but they neither conceived of it nor believed in it.
Relevance of the verse to the chapter: This verse is among the texts that elucidate tawḥīd (pure monotheism) and the testimony that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. It makes clear that whoever adopts a rival to Allah and loves that rival as he should love Allah has fallen into shirk, from which it follows that tawḥīd means singling out the Lord with this love—a love that demands exclusive worship, humility, and submission to Him alone.
Points derived from the verse:
- An essential aspect of tawḥīd and of the testimony that there is no deity but Allah is reserving for Allah a love that entails humility and submission.
- The polytheists do, in fact, love Allah greatly, yet that love did not admit them into Islam because they associated others with Him in it.
- Shirk is an act of injustice.
- A stern warning awaits the polytheists on the Day of Resurrection.
