Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) related:
“A ḥabr—one of the Jewish scholars—came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, ‘O Muḥammad, we find in the Scripture that Allah will place the heavens on one finger, the earths on one finger, the trees on one finger, the soil on one finger, and the rest of creation on one finger; then He will say, “I am the King.”’
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed so broadly that his molar teeth became visible, affirming the rabbi’s statement. He then recited: ‘They have not appraised Allah with the appraisal due to Him, and the whole earth will be in His grasp on the Day of Resurrection…’ (Q 39:67).
In another wording recorded by Muslim: “…and the mountains and the trees on one finger; then He will shake them and say, ‘I am the King, I am Allah.’”
Bukhārī records: “He places the heavens on one finger, the water and the soil on one finger, and the rest of creation on one finger.” (1) Both Imams transmitted it.
Muslim also narrates—on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar—in a marfūʿ report: “Allah will fold up the heavens on the Day of Resurrection, then He will take them in His right hand and say, ‘I am the King. Where are the tyrants? Where are the arrogant?’ He will then fold up the seven earths, take them in His left hand, and say, ‘I am the King. Where are the tyrants? Where are the arrogant?’” (2)
It is further related from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: “The seven heavens and the seven earths, in the Hand of the Most Merciful, are nothing but like a mustard seed in the hand of any one of you.”
