Lessons drawn from the hadith:
1- The intense fear of falling into minor shirk, for two reasons:
a) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, expressed profound anxiety about its occurrence.
b) He feared it even for the fully righteous; therefore those beneath their rank have even more cause for concern.
2- His deep compassion for his community and his earnest dedication to guiding and advising them.
3- Shirk is divided into major and minor forms. Major shirk is to set anything alongside Allah in what is His exclusive prerogative, whereas minor shirk is whatever the revealed texts describe as shirk yet does not reach the level of the major. The distinctions between them are:
a) Major shirk nullifies all deeds, whereas minor shirk invalidates only the deed that accompanies it.
b) Major shirk consigns its perpetrator to eternal punishment in Hell, while minor shirk does not entail eternal residence in the Fire.
c) Major shirk expels a person from the faith, whereas minor shirk does not.
