Overall meaning: The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—informs us that the best members of this nation are its first three generations: the Companions, the Successors, and the Successors of the Successors. Their pre-eminence stems from the clear manifestation of Islam in their lives and their closeness to the light of Prophethood. After these distinguished generations, evil would surface within the ummah: innovations would multiply, people would treat testimony lightly, scorn the sanctity of trusts and vows, revel in worldly luxury, and grow heedless of the Hereafter. The appearance of such blameworthy practices signals a weakening of their adherence to Islam.
Relevance of the hadith to the chapter: It censures those who take testimony lightly, and testimony is a form of oath.
Points derived from the hadith:
1- The merit of the first three (or four) generations: the Companions, the Successors, and their followers.
2- Censure of rushing into testimony.
3- Censure of treating vows lightly and the duty to fulfil them.
4- Censure of betraying trusts and an exhortation to discharge them faithfully.
5- Censure of luxuriant living, attachment to the world, and disregard for the Hereafter.
6- A sign of his Prophethood, peace and blessings be upon him, for he foretold events before they occurred and they transpired exactly as he had said.
