Both al-Bukhārī and Muslim also transmit from Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with them—that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declare, “Every image-maker is in the Fire; for every image he fashioned a soul will be created that will punish him in Hell.” (1) They likewise relate from him, in a narration traced back to the Prophet ﷺ, “Whoever fashions an image in this world will be ordered to blow life into it, yet he will never be able to do so.” (2)
––
Every image-maker: that is, one who depicts a being endowed with a soul.
in the Fire: because he has attempted something akin to the creative act that belongs exclusively to Allah.
a soul will be created for every image that will punish him: the preposition bi here means “in,” i.e., a soul will be placed in every image, and that very image—now alive—will torment him.
Overall meaning of the ḥadith: The Prophet ﷺ informs us that the ultimate fate of image-makers on the Day of Resurrection is the Fire, where they will face the harshest torment. All the images they produced in this life will be brought forth, each endowed with a soul, and those very images will be unleashed to punish them in Hell. Thus they are tormented by what their own hands fashioned—Allah’s refuge is sought. Part of their punishment is also being tasked with the impossible: breathing life into the images they made.
Relevance of the ḥadith to the chapter: It provides clear evidence for the prohibition of image-making and the severe threat that hangs over those who engage in it.
Points derived from the ḥadith:
1- The prohibition of image-making and its classification among the major sins.
