Chapter: Reports Concerning the Image-Makers
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stated, “Allah the Exalted says: ‘Who is more unjust than one who attempts to create as I create? Let them create an ant, or let them create a grain of wheat, or let them create a barley seed.’” (1) Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Relevance of this chapter to the Book of Tawhid: Since the making of images is a gateway to idolatry, which contradicts pure monotheism, the author devoted a separate chapter to clarify its prohibition and the severe warning attached to it.
“What has been reported about the image-makers” means: the stern threats directed at them.
“Who is more unjust”–that is, no one is more unjust than such a person.
“To create as I create”–because the image-maker is imitating Allah’s act of creation.
“Let them create”–a challenge meant to expose their incapacity and to threaten them.
“An ant”–the small ant.
“Or let them create”–another incapacitating challenge.
“A grain”–a kernel of wheat that possesses flavor, nutritive substance, and the potential to grow and reproduce.
“Or let them create”–yet another incapacitating challenge.
“A barley seed”–a different type of grain.
