And His saying, “Those who think ill of Allah—upon them is the revolving doom of evil…,” — the verse.
The full verse reads: “And Allah is angry with them, has cursed them, and has prepared for them Hell—and what an evil destination it is” (Al-Fath 6).
• “Those who think” (al-ẓānnīn): that is, the male and female hypocrites who entertain evil thoughts about Allah.
• “Evil thoughts” (ẓann al-sūʾ), whether the sīn is read with a fatḥa or a ḍamma, means the wicked assumption that He will not grant victory to His Messenger and the believers.
• “Upon them is the revolving doom of evil”: the circle of punishment and humiliation is fixed on them and will never leave them.
• “Allah is angry with them and has cursed them”: He is wrathful toward them and has driven them far from His mercy.
• “And has prepared for them”: He has made ready for them in the Hereafter…
• “Hell”: a fire of the severest torment.
• “And what an evil destination it is”: a wretched abode to which they will be taken on the Day of Resurrection.
Overall meaning of the verse: Allah declares that those who impugn His wisdom and imagine that He will not support His Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him—his Companions, and his followers against their enemies are doomed to a circle of torment. Allah has banished them from His mercy and has readied for them, in the Hereafter, a Fire that is the worst place one could ever reach.
Relevance of the verse to this chapter: It shows that whoever thinks Allah will not grant victory to His party over their enemies is guilty of entertaining an evil thought about Him.
