Overall purport of the ḥadīth: Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that they used to say “Peace be upon Allah,” whereupon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade them and explained that such wording is unfitting for the Almighty, for He is al-Salām and from Him all peace proceeds. Accordingly, it is inappropriate to greet Him with salām; rather, He is the One who grants salām to His servants and shields them from every harm.
Relevance of the ḥadīth to the chapter: it contains a clear prohibition against saying, “Peace be upon Allah.”
Points gleaned from the ḥadīth:
- The prohibition of directing salām to Allah.
- al-Salām is one of His divine names.
- The duty to educate the uninformed.
- Linking a legal ruling to its underlying rationale.
