The one thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment are those whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ described as foregoing ruqyah and cauterization in order to perfect their monotheism, taking instead the stronger means—placing their trust in Allah. They never asked anyone else for ruqyah or anything beyond it.
Relevance of the ḥadith to the chapter: it sheds light on the true nature of tawḥīd and the reward that awaits it with Allah Most High.
Lessons drawn from the ḥadith
- The virtue of the early Muslims (salaf): when they witnessed celestial signs, they did not treat them as ordinary events but recognized them as signs from Allah.
- Their zeal for sincerity and their intense aversion to showing off.
- Their insistence on proof for the soundness of a view and their careful attention to evidence.
- The legitimacy of stopping where the evidence stops and acting upon one’s knowledge; whoever acts on what has reached him has done well.
- Conveying knowledge with gentleness and wisdom.
- The permissibility of ruqyah.
- Guiding someone who has taken a lawful course to something even better.
- The excellence of our Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, to whom the nations were shown.
- That the prophets differ in the number of their followers.
- A refutation of those who argue from sheer numbers and claim that truth resides only with the majority.
- The obligation to follow the truth even if its adherents are few.
- The merit of Moses and his people.
- The merit of this ummah, for they are the largest community to follow their Prophet ﷺ.
