Al-Mulakhkhas fi Sharh Kitab al-TawhidSalih Al-Fawzan

– “To reject it”: that is, to refuse any obedience to the ṭāghūt.

– “And Satan desires…”: by commanding them and adorning for them the idea of referring their disputes to the ṭāghūt.

– “To mislead them”: to divert them from the path of truth and guidance.

– “Far, far astray”: so that he may drive them into a deep and grievous deviation.

– “To what Allah has sent down”: namely, the rulings found in the Quran concerning the judgment between people.

– “And to the Messenger”: so that he may judge between them regarding whatever they dispute about.

– “You see the hypocrites”: those who claim faith while they are liars.

– “Turning away” (yaṣuddūna): they give you the cold shoulder; here the verb functions as a circumstantial accusative (ḥāl).

– “From you”: that is, they turn to someone other than you.

– “Completely” (ṣudūdan): the verbal noun of the root ṣadda, or a term derived from it, meaning total aversion.

– “But how [will it be]?”: What will their state be? What will they do?

– “When a calamity strikes them”: when a punishment such as killing, and the like, befalls them.

– “Because of what their own hands have sent ahead”: on account of seeking judgment elsewhere and being displeased with your ruling—will they be able to escape it?

– “Then they come to you”: to apologize once they are afflicted; this clause is coordinated either with “when the calamity strikes them” or with “they turn away.”

– “We intended nothing…”: We did not mean, by turning to someone other than you for judgment—

– “But good-will” (iḥsānan): to reconcile between the parties.

– “And accord” (tawfīqan): to bring the two opponents together; we had no wish to oppose you.

Overall meaning of the verses: Allah—exalted is He—rebukes those who claim faith in what He revealed to His Messenger and to the prophets before him, yet still wish to seek judgment, in settling disputes, from sources other than the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger,
