Al-Mulakhkhas fi Sharh Kitab al-TawhidSalih Al-Fawzan

In both Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim it is narrated from Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him), in a report traced back to the Prophet: “He is not one of us who slaps the cheeks, tears the collars, and calls out with the cries of jāhiliyyah (the pre-Islamic period of ignorance).” (1)

“He is not one of us”: This belongs to the realm of threat and warning, and it must not be subjected to figurative reinterpretation.

“Who slaps the cheeks”: The cheek is singled out because it is what is usually struck; hitting any other part of the face falls under the same ruling.

“Tears the collars”: juyūb is the plural of jayb, the head-opening of a garment.

“The cries of jāhiliyyah”: namely, wailing over the deceased while invoking ruin and destruction.

Overall meaning of the ḥadīth: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) threatens anyone who engages in any of these acts, because they contain resentment toward the Lord, a failure to show the required patience, harm to oneself by slapping the face, squandering of wealth by ripping clothes, invocations of doom and destruction, and an implicit complaint against Allah, Exalted is He.

Relevance to the chapter: The ḥadīth establishes the prohibition of resenting the divine decree—whether by word or deed—and shows that it is among the major sins.

Points derived from the ḥadīth:
1- The prohibition of resenting Allah’s decree in word or deed, and that this is a major sin.
2- The obligation to exercise patience at times of calamity.
3- The obligation to differ from the ways of jāhiliyyah, for opposing them is one of the objectives of the wise Lawgiver.
