Al-Mulakhkhas fi Sharh Kitab al-TawhidSalih Al-Fawzan

of showing gratitude for Allah’s favor—the favor of sending down rain—but instead you turn it into denial.

In other words, you deny Him by attributing His blessings to something other than Allah, namely the stars, and you say, “We were given rain by the nawʾ of such-and-such.”

Overall meaning of the verse: Allah censures the idolaters for their ingratitude in ascribing the coming of rain to a star. He declares that such a statement is sheer falsehood, for rain descends solely by Allah’s grace and decree; no created being has any share in it.

Relevance of the verse to this chapter: Allah, exalted is He, rejects the attribution of rainfall to stars and lunar mansions and labels it a lie.

Lessons derived from the verse:

  1. The attribution of rainfall to the anwāʾ is invalid.
  2. Claiming that rain falls because of a particular nawʾ is a lie.
  3. It is obligatory to thank Allah for His blessings and to attribute the sending of rain exclusively to His bounty and generosity.
